Thompson holds off McPherson, Levell to top 60m at Puma/Fuller/Anderson meet

OLYMPIC Games and World Athletics Championships 100 metres silver medallist Kishane Thompson held off strong challenges from SprinTec's Odaine McPherson and Bryan Levell of Uptimum Track Club to win the men's 60 metres at last Saturday's Puma/Fuller/Anderson Development meet at GC Foster College.

Representing MVP Track Club, Thompson was out of the blocks very quickly but Levell, the World 200 metres bronze medallist, finished strongly. Thompson, however, held on for the win in 6.52 seconds ahead of McPherson, 6.53, and Levell 6.54, who ended second and third, respectively, in personal best times.

In the women's event World Championships 4x100 metres relay silver medallist Tia Clayton and Jonielle Smith posted personal best times of 7.02 and 7.06 to finish first and second, respectively. Natasha Morrison ended third in 7.31 as MVP athletes took the first three spots.

Saturday also saw some good results in the 400m among senior and high school athletes.

Shanakaye Anderson of the University of Technology captured the women's race in 52.78 seconds. Great Britain's Nia Wedderburn Goodison of Dynamic Speed Track Club finished second in 55.00, and Keira Meikle of GC Foster College, third in 56.94.

On the male side, St Vincent's Earl Simmons, representing GC Foster College, picked up the win in 48.13 ahead of his teammate Anderson Burris of Trinidad and Tobago, who was second in a personal best 48.29. Jahiem Watson closed out a GC Foster top three sweep with a third-place finish in 48.73.

Holmwood Technical's girls dominated the one-lap event among high schools, winning in two classes. They swept the top two spots in Class Two as Anastacia Hall won in a personal best 54.31 with and Moya Oakley second in 56.47. Alikay Reynolds of Alphansus Davis was third in 56.91.

Abrina Wright of Holmwood was best in Class One after winning her heat in 54.32. Shanoya Douglas of Holland High who won her heat in 55 45 was second overall with third going to Denae Hodges of Sydney Pagon in 55.93.

Alex Jordan Hall of Clarendon College topped Class Three with a personal best of 58.91. Rihanna Gayle (59.30) of Edwin Allen was second with third going to Jadeanne Patterson of Alphansus Davis in 1:00.26.

Kingston College athletes swept the top three spots in the Class Three boys 400m. Marcado Williams won in a personal best 51.96 ahead of Tariq Gordon (53.25) and Makeq Fellows (53.36).

Denbigh High's Markland Williams had a good day at the meet. After posting a personal best 1:58.83 for a second place overall in the Class Two 800m, he returned to top his peers in the 400m in a personal best 50.17. Tiene Tyril Bennett of Rusea's was second in 50.45 with 800m winner, Luke Plummer of Sydney Pagon, third in a personal best 50.56.

Holmwood Technical's Jaydon Collins won the Class One boys 400m in a personal best 48.00. Jense Brooks of Alphansus Davis (48.59) was second, while Jordan Rehedul of Kingston College was third in 48.62.
