Delomar apologises to fans in Nicaragua
A missing wallet sparked an embarrassing misunderstanding for dancehall artiste Delomar RDX during a recent performance in Nicaragua, forcing him to return to the stage to apologise after wrongly believing that it had disappeared while in the middle of adoring fans.
The entertainer, formerly one half of the dancehall duo RDX, said the incident unfolded as he performed his final song and stepped into the crowd to interact with fans. As supporters rushed towards him despite the presence of security, he felt something brush against his pocket.
Believing that his wallet had been taken, Delomar abruptly stopped the performance and began searching for it.
“I feel like a nudge on the back part of my pocket, and when I feel my pocket, I realised that my wallet wasn’t there,” he told THE WEEKEND STAR. “So I said, ‘Pull up. I lost my wallet.’ And I start to look all around to see if the wallet actually dropped out of my pocket. So I said, ‘I will not sing any more song until I find my wallet’, and I exit the stage, and went to my car. I was really upset because I have a lot of important things in my wallet,” Delomar related.
He explained that he always has his wallet on him wherever in the world he goes on tour. “You never know when something is going to happen that you have to show identification, so I don’t leave my wallet any time at all, even when I am performing.”
The panic turned to embarrassment when he returned to his hotel and discovered that he had left the wallet inside his bag before the show.
Realising his mistake, Delomar immediately went back to the venue, where fans were still waiting because police had reportedly prevented people from leaving until the wallet was located. He returned to the stage and apologised for the confusion and for the way he had exited the concert.
“I made an honest mistake about misplacing my wallet, and everything went downhill from there,” he said. “Some people started making their own assumptions and saying a lot of things. What I do know is that I didn’t accuse anybody of stealing it. But because of the language barrier, they took that differently and start to say whatever they want to say. I really felt a way about making that mistake about the wallet and that I didn’t exit properly, and that’s what I was apologising for as well as,” Delomar continued.
He later posted on social media that he had made a huge mistake and was living with regret. The incident quickly spread online, with some people interpreting the situation as an accusation that someone in the audience had stolen the wallet. Delomar maintained that he never accused anyone of theft but believes the language barrier contributed to the misunderstanding.
Delomar notes that he enjoys a massive following in Nicaragua, a country that he has toured repeatedly over the past several years. He said fans there enthusiastically sing along to his songs despite many of them not speaking English, allowing his performances to transcend the language barrier.
“Nicaragua is a place that is dominated by the RDX brand,” Delomar told THE WEEKEND STAR.
However, since he says that the fans know his songs word-for-word, when performing there, he lets the songs do most of the talking.
“And when I do talk, I have the translator. It does not bring across how I really want my performance to be, but I know how to still rock a show even when they can’t talk English. So I don’t have a problem with performance because every time I go there, I will go viral in Nicaragua,” he said.
Now seeking to put the wallet episode behind him, Delomar said he is focused on the remainder of his visit in the Central American country. He is scheduled to perform again on July 15 before appearing as the featured guest artiste at a free concert on July 18, hosted by the Nicaraguan government. He described the event as similar to an Independence celebration and said he remained grateful for the support he continued to receive from Nicaraguan fans.
“I feel really wonderful that they can actually handpick me to perform. They put all the names in a pool, and everybody said Delomar RDX. I just want everybody in Nicaragua to understand that the love that I have for Nicaragua is really amazing. They remind me of Jamaican people,” he said.
