Two men are now in police custody after they were allegedly caught red-handed stealing avocados in Newton district, St Elizabeth, on Thursday morning.

According to the Area 3 Agricultural Protection Branch, about 10:30 a.m. the cops went to the farming community following a report that men were seen picking the avocados from a businessman's property and packing them into a bag.

When the police first arrived, the alleged thieves were nowhere in sight. However, the lawmen expanded their search and later stumbled upon the men still in the area.

Under questioning, the men reportedly admitted to the theft. A bag filled with avocados, believed to be stolen, was also recovered.

Both suspects were taken into custody and are expected to be formally charged. Their identities are being withheld pending further investigations.
