Lep in death toll rises as ministry warns of more cases coming
Health and Wellness Minister Dr Christopher Tufton says Jamaica's leptospirosis outbreak continues to worsen, with more cases and more deaths now linked to Hurricane Melissa.
Speaking at a special press conference at Jamaica House on Wednesday, Tufton revealed that the death toll has climbed to 11, including three confirmed leptospirosis fatalities.
He added that the country now has 91 suspected or probable cases, with 10 confirmed from testing. The numbers reflect data up to November 22.
Tufton said the Health Ministry is actively working to contain the spread, stressing that environmental health teams are already in the field dealing with post-hurricane conditions.
He said the ministry is also collaborating with partners to strengthen solid waste efforts, vector control, PCR rapid testing, manpower, and public education as the island battles the outbreak triggered by the October 28 hurricane.
