Canadians and Jamaica Under 17 square off in rugby series
With a view to identify and develop young talents to represent their countries, Canada and Jamaica's National Rugby League Under-17 teams, will today, begin their first-ever rugby league tour here.
Competition will kick-off with a nine-a-side competition. Canada will line up against local schools; Spanish Town High, Oracabessa High, BB Coke High and Bog Walk High, at the Drax Hall Sports Complex in St Ann.
The team arrived on Monday for the historic six-day tour.
The Canadians open their account at the Drax Hall Sports when they
participate in a nine-a-side competition against four local high school teams.
The series will culminate with a Test match against Jamaica's Under 17 on Saturday, at the Barbican Football Complex, at 4:30 p.m.
Jamaica Rugby League Association director- Romeo Monteith was wlecomign of the Canadians.
"We welcome Canada. Once more, they have shown like us that the development of rugby league in our hemisphere is a serious matter," he said.
Canada's team manager, Andy Blackburn said that Canada Young Wolverines aim is to not only help to develop the Jamaican game but expose their own.
"We aim help our close Jamaican friends develop the game further in Jamaica, but to expose our young Canadian players to some rich Caribbean culture and learn more about the great game of rugby league," he said.
